Interpreting Gender Roles, By Jeffrey Eugenides Essay
Interpreting Gender Roles The concept of gender roles is a system that has been created and enforced by tradition. Society has discovered a way to categorize and condemn those who do not fit or pertain to the characteristics of their gender. In Middlesex, a novel written by Jeffrey Eugenides, characters dilute the idea of being predisposed to gender roles by challenging them and generating the idea of ââ¬Å"loosely definedâ⬠gender superiority in the era of the American Revolution. The American Revolution when being observed from a gender conformity point of view may be seen as unruly towards those of the female gender. Women were stripped of any and all rights or freedoms that they may have had and were forced to engage in a patriarchal society which by definition is a family, society, or government ruled by male dominance. According to an article entitled ââ¬Å"Revolutionary Changes and Limitations: Womenâ⬠published by the Independence Hall Association, this tyranny ov er women was so atrocious that even the law did not recognize women as independent and allowed them no say over their civic, political, and economical constituents. In Middlesex, the American Revolution and the modern day attitudes toward women and gender formality can be blatantly seen, but characters such as Sourmelina ââ¬Å"Linaâ⬠Zizmo, Desdemona Stephanides, Lefty Stephanides, and Calliope ââ¬Å"Calâ⬠Stephanides challenge these pretenses through the use of: disobedience, rejection, and self-establishment. Linaââ¬â¢s character

Essay on Christian Elements in Beowulf - 1568 Words
Beowulf is one of the great heroic poems in English literature. The epic follows a courageous warrior named Beowulf throughout his young, adult life and into his old age. As a young man, Beowulf becomes a legendary hero when he saves the land of the Danes from the hellish creatures, Grendel and his mother. Later, after fifty years pass, Beowulf is an old man and a great king of the Geats. A monstrous dragon soon invades his peaceful kingdom and he defends his people courageously, dying in the process. His body is burned and his ashes are placed in a cave by the sea. By placing his ashes in the seaside cave, people passing by will always remember the legendary hero and king, Beowulf. In this epic the presentation of the story tellingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The frequent allusions to the power of fate, the motive of blood revenge, and the praise of worldly glory bear testimony to the ancient background of pagan conceptions and ideals. However, the general tone of the epic and its ethical viewpoint are mostly Christian . There is no longer a genuine pagan atmosphere. The sentiment has been softened and purified. The virtues of moderation, unselfishness, consideration for others are practiced and appreciated. The author has fairly exhaulted the fights with Grendel, his mother, and the dragon into a conflict between powers of good and evil. The figure of Grendel, while originally an ordinary troll is conceived as an impersonation of evil and darkness, even an incarnation of the Christian devil. Grendel is a member of the race of Cain, he is a creature dwelling in the outer darkness, a giant and cannibal. When he crawls off to die, he is said to join the route of devils in hell. The story of a race of demonic monsters and giants descended from Cain. It came form a tradition established by the apocryphal Book of Enoch and early Jewish and Christian interpretations of Genesis 6:4. Al Capone Essay Example For Students
Al Capone Essay Mr. MaclayUnited States History II- CP8 May 1999Al Capone in the 1920sOrganized crime was not so organized up until the 1920s. When the 1920s arrived, the American lifestyle changed dramatically. People started investing money in home appliances and automobiles, womens skirts became higher and drinking became very popular. Also, organized crime came to a rise in the 1920s. And in the high ranks of organized crime was Al Capone. Al Capone ran many illegal businesses including bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, and murders. There were many gangs in the world of organized crime and Al Capones was at the top. Al Capone was the most infamous gangster in the 1920s. Being a big time gangster was big business. Money was made fast and very easily. Bootlegging alcohol was by far the most profitable in the 1920s, this was because of the prohibition. Gambling was another business that paid off. Gambling stations were set up all over cities. Prostitution and Murders were also crimes that made gangsters money.Alphonse Capone was the biggest force in organized crime. He started his career of crime in Boston, as an apprentice to Johnny Torrio. That is where he earned the unforgettable nickname Scarface. It was in a bar when Capone made some rude comments about a woman. Minutes later, the womans brother sliced Capone in the face. D. VanGorder 2This man was a friend of Charles Lucky Luciano. Al Capone was punished and forced to apologize. Al Capone did not become a leader until he went to Chicago. At the time he was still an apprentice to Johnny Torrio. In the midst of the gang violence and bootlegging was Chicago. Chicago was a great place to start a ring of organized crime. The government was very weak which made it easier to do crime. Capone entered the city of Chicago in 1920. At the time, Big Jim Colosimo ran things. He made about 50,000 dollars a month. Torrio and Capone started their business with four gambling joints/whore houses in Chicago. These underground places were known as deuces. In Chicago Capone met a man who would be his friend for life, Jack Guzik. Guzik was Jewish. His family lived off prostitution. Al Capone never worried about racial issues, his wife was even Irish. After Jack Guzick was roughed up by a Joe Howard, Capone let out his temper. It did not help when Howard called Capone some rude names. Soon after, Capone shot him down. There was no conviction, it was clear that Capone was becoming more and more powerful. He had to have connections in the law to not be convicted. Al Capone finally got a taste of leadership after a few years of partnership with Torrio. Torrio left Capone in control of their areas to take his sick mother back to Italy. Capone was at the top of a Chicago suburb known as Cicero. At the age of 25, Capone was one of the most powerful men in Chicago, but being such a force also made him a target for rival gangs. D. VanGorder 3In New York, Arnold Rothstein was the man. He was a bootlegger, he also sold narcotics, and he started off many big names in crime such as Charles Lucky Luciano, Frank Costello and Dutch Shultz. Rothstein made friends with as many bootleggers and gamblers as he could. He never wanted anything to go wrong. He was sort of paranoid but Rothstein was a very powerful man. The most incredible act ever made by a thug just may have been the fixing of the 1919 World Series between the Reds and the White Sox. Many of the White Sox star players wanted higher wages, owners of the club refused. But Rothstien changed that. I t was said that he paid off eight of the White Sox players 10,000 dollars each. The Reds would have lost but with a little help from Rothstein the White Sox did lose and Rothstein got back all of his money winning bets. .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d , .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .postImageUrl , .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d , .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:hover , .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:visited , .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:active { border:0!important; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:active , .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub05f4677e0318c559e06c095170cf90d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Similarities between war in Iraq and Vietnam EssayCharles Lucky Luciano was another one of the most successful gangsters during the 1920s. Pulp Fiction Essays (1912 words) - English-language Films
Pulp Fiction Introducing a film such as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction takes much patience and significant artistry with words. Tarantino's work is an audacious, outrageous look at honor among lowlifes, told in a somewhat radical style overlapping a handful of separate stories. "Quentin Tarantino is the Jerry Lee Lewis of cinema, a pounding performer who doesn't care if he tears up the piano, as long as everybody is rocking" (R.Ebert). Introducing a film such as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction takes much patience and significant artistry with words. The title is perfect. Like those old pulp magazines named "Thrilling Wonder Stories" and "Official Detective", the film creates a world where there are no normal people and no ordinary days; where breathless prose clatters down fire escapes and leaps into the dumpster. Or at least there are no ordinary days for those who don't consider tactless and accidental murder to be part of their everyday agenda and occupation. The characters in this film separate societal normality from personal normality. For example, Jackson and Travolta are magnetic as a pair of hit-men who have philosophical debates on a regular basis. These characters continue to think that they're "just doing their job" and that there jobs are for the same purpose as any body else's job - to get paid and then to, in return, pay the bills. Societal norms push the audience to believe that these characters along with Ving Rhames, (Marsellus Wallace), are misfits and should be "taken care of". Tarantino starts us off with a dual definition of "pulp" one being "a soft, moist, shapeless, mass of matter" and two being "a book containing lurid subject matter, and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper". This introduces the audience to the presentation of the film. It's segmented structure is Tarantino's way of playing with the audience's perceptions. The entertainment throughout Pulp Fiction is scintillating, it captures the audience and forces them to piece the segments together in order to form one complete story. Hence the title containing the word "pulp" and the product being "rough" and somewhat "unfinished" to the viewer. This voluble, violent, pumped-up movie isn't for every taste, not for the squeamish, but it's got more vitality than almost any other film of 1994. The screenplay by Tarantino and Avary is so well written in a psoriatic yet potent way that you'll want to rub noses in it - the noses of all those zombie writers who take "screenwriting classes that teach them the formulas for writing "hit films". Pulp Fiction is constructed in such a nonlinear way that you could see it a dozen times and not be able to remember what comes next. It doubles back on itself telling several interlocking stories about characters who inhabit a world of crime and intrigue, triple-crosses and desperation. Vincent Vega (Travolta) and partner Jules Winnfield (Jackson) are a couple of mid-level hit-men who carry out assignments for a mob boss. We see them first on their way to a violent showdown discussing such mysteries as why in Paris they have a French word for Quarter Pounders. They're as innocent in their way as Huck and Jim, floating down the Mississippi and speculating on how foreigners can possibly understand each other. Vince's and Jule's careers are a series of assignments that they can't quite handle. Especially Travolta's character, not only does he kill people inadvertently ("The car hit a bump") but he doesn't know how to clean up after himself. Good thing the two of them know people like Mr. Wolf (Harvey Keitel) who specializes in messes; and has friends like Lance (Eric Stoltz) who owns a "big medical encyclopedia" for emergency situations. Uma Thurman can tell you about those medical procedures. Bruce Willis is compelling as a crooked boxer whose plan to take it on the lam hits a few detours. Butch Coolidge (Willis) is supposed to throw a fight but bails and looses Marsellus (Rhames) a lot of loot. Butch and his girly are to ditch town ASAP but first he needs to make a dangerous trip back to his apartment for a valuable family heirloom. The history of this heirloom is described through a flashback dream narrated by Christopher Walken, a Vietnam veteran. Walken's dialogue build to the movie's biggest laugh. The
